Inland areas of Sunderland and parts of County Durham were covered in a light blanket of snow on Tuesday as windy and cold conditions hit the region.
Penshaw, Easington and Murton were all affected by the snow as temperatures remained stubbonly low at around 4 °C.
Although some made the most of the wintry scenes to enjoy their daily exercise in the likes of Peterlee, spells of sleet earlier in the day made for tricky driving conditions on the A19.
And the cold snap shows no signs of going anywhere soon, with the Met Office forecast predicting that it is likely to stay chilly for much of the UK into next week with brisk easterly winds making it feel even colder.
The Met Office also says that there is a likelihood of cold conditions continuing into mid-February, however the weather will be potentially drier than this week.
