Man appears before court charged over suspected stabbing at Sunderland's Wheatsheaf pub

A man has been sent to face the crown court following his first appearance to face a charge linked with a suspected stab attack in a Sunderland pub.

Daniel Barnes, of Esdale in Ryhope, faced allegations of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm, common assault and possession of a bladed article when he appeared before Newcastle Magistrates’ Court earlier today, Thursday, May 20.

It followed an incident at the Wheatsheaf pub in Monkwearmouth at around 10.15pm on Tuesday, May 18, when police received reports of a group of men fighting inside the bar.

No pleas were entered by the 34-year-old and the case was sent to Newcastle Crown Court, which is within the same building, with the next hearing be held on Thursday, June 17.
